Chittagong, Bangladesh: Bangladesh reached 86-1 at stumps in reply to Sri Lankankan mammoth total of 587 in the first inning on the second day of the second test with Shamsur Rahman on 45 and Imrul Kayes on 36. at the crease.

Tamim Iqbal was the only batsman to go -- for a duck -- after Sri Lanka fast bowler Suranga Lakmal produced a delivery that kept low. Lakmal finished the day with 1-18.

The hosts could have been two down had Nuwan Pradeep not missed an easy catch near mid-on when Kayes lofted Ajantha Mendis.

On a pitch where Sangakkara thrived, Bangladesh batsmen were often left puzzled by the bounce.

Earlier, Kumar Sangakkara reached his maiden test triple-century on Wednesday to lead Sri Lanka to a mammoth first innings lead of 501 on the second day of the second test against Bangladesh.

Sangakkara reached the landmark in emphatic fashion by hitting consecutive sixes over the long-off and mid-wicket fences off Shakib Al Hasan. He was the last batsman out, for 319, as Sri Lanka posted a daunting total of 587.

Sangakkara became the third Sri Lanka player to score a triple-century, joining Mahela Jayawardene and Sanath Jayasuriya, and the 27th player overall. He also passed 11,000 test runs.

Sangakkara shared a century stand with Mendis, who scored 47 before falling victim to a quicker Shakib delivery. Shakib was the pick of the bowlers with 5-148, his 11th five-wicket haul, while Nasir Hossain took 2-16.

When Mendis went, Sangakkara was on 253 and seemingly stranded. But he kept his composure and farmed the strike with Suranga Lakmal and Pradeep at the non-striker's end.
