The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to announce India's ODI squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 tournament on August 21. The mega tournament is scheduled to kick off on August 30 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka but there was no real development on squad announcement till now.
According to a report from ESPNCricinfo, the BCCI will be holding a meeting with the new Chairman of the senior men's selection committee Ajit Agarkar and head coach Rahul Dravid in Delhi on Monday. Indian captain Rohit Sharma will attend a meeting via video conference with selector Shiv Sunder Das. The latter is currently with team India in their ongoing T20I series against Ireland in Dublin.
Selectors are also expected to discuss a draft squad for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 with Rohit. The deadline to submit the draft squad is September 5 but the selection committee is looking to finalise their last 15-member squad as soon as possible.
The Indian cricket team is reportedly waiting on the fitness of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. According to the same report, Rahul is ready to make his comeback from a knee injury while Shreyas is showing positive signs of return to action. India experimented with some new faces in the middle order in the recent ODIs against West Indies but none made a considerable impact to claim their spot.
Suryakumar Yadav has struggled to replicate his T20I form in ODIs but remains in contention to make the team for Asia Cup squad. He is tipped to start in the no.4 position if either or both KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer fail to recover on time. Youngster Tilak Varma made a positive impression on his international debut on the West Indies tour and his name is also in contention for the Asia Cup squad.
In bowling, Jasprit Bumrah made a sensational comeback on his injury return with two wickets against Ireland in the first T20I match on Friday (August 18) and is expected to feature in Asia Cup 2023 squad as well.
