Galle (Sri Lanka), Jun 25: Younis Khan and Asad Shafiq shared an unbeaten 70-run partnership as Pakistan's batsmen finally showed some intent in the first test against Sri Lanka to reach108-4 at lunch on fourth day Monday.

Pakistan lost just one wicket in the first session after resuming on 36-3 when night watchman Saeed Ajmal was run out in the second over of the morning at Galle International Stadium

Former captain Younis and Shafiq then set about steadying the innings, adding 70 runs for the fifth wicket.

Sri Lanka had opportunities to dismiss both batsmen during the session. Younis on nine lofted left-arm spinner Rangana Herath coming down the track but couldn't get the elevation and Tillakaratne Dilshan at mid-off dived forward to take the catch. Younis survived after television replays were inconclusive.

Shafiq was given a life while on 33 when Kumar Sangakkara failed to hold onto a catch at short mid-wicket.

Younis was unbeaten on 34 with two fours at the break with Shafiq on 36 with five boundaries.

On Sunday, Sri Lanka declined to enforce the follow-on after bowling out Pakistan for 100 runs in its first innings, only 10 more than its lowest ever total against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka, aware of bad weather forecasts for the final two days of the test, quickly declared at 137-5, led by Dilshan who smashed 56 runs off 58 balls with nine fours.

Sri Lanka scored 472 in its first innings, with Kumar Sangakkara on 199 not out.
