Despite a brilliant maiden century by captain Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh lost to New Zealand by 121 runs on the fifth and final day of the only Test match here at the Seddon Park on Friday.

Shakib batted with great responsibility to resist against hostile bowling by the Kiwis. He occupied the crease for over six hours to make 100 from 129 balls with three sixes and fifteen fours. He added 79 runs with Mushfiqur Rahim (22) for the sixth wicket stand and 68 with Mahmudullah (42) for the seventh wicket partnership.

When Shakib was dismissed just after completing his first Test hundred, Bangladesh were 152 runs away from an impossible victory with two wickets in hand.

However, they were all out for 282 runs after lunch on the final day of the match.

Tim Southee was the most successful bowler for New Zealand with three wickets for 41 runs while spinners Jeetan Patel and captain Daniel Vettori claimed two wickets each.

Martin Guptill was declared man-of-the-match for his innings of 189 and 56 not out in the match.
