New Zealand went to tea eight down, and debutant Matt Henry skied England newcomer Mark Wood on 10, and Trent Boult, yet to score, sliced fast bowler Stuart Broad, giving James Anderson a hard, running catch over his shoulder.

BJ Watling was left not out on 61, the fifth 50-plus score of the innings.

New Zealand started the day on 303-2, replying to England's first innings of 389.
