Chittagong, Bangladesh: Bangladeshi offspinner Sohag Gazi claimed opener Hamish Rutherford as the only wicket of the opening session as New Zealand reached 93-1 at lunch on the first day of the first test against Bangladesh on Wednesday.
Rutherford made 34 off 55 balls with three boundaries and six after New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Rutherford and fellow opener Peter Fulton shared 57 runs in the first wicket partnership.
Abdur Razzak caught Rutherford at mid-off after the New Zealander gave a leading edge off Gazi (1-30) while attempting a pull shot.
Fulton on 38 and Kane Williamson with 15 will resume after the break.
New Zealand got off to a steady start under sunny skies after groundsmen prepared the outfield after heavy overnight rain.
Mushfiqur Rahim used five bowlers with a combination of pacermen and spinners in the first session, but Gazi was the only success in a low and slow wicket.
Earlier, Bangladesh dropped Al Amin, Mahmudullah and Naeem Islam from its 14-member squad and handed middle order batsman Marshall Aiyub his test debut.
New Zealand picked two newcomers -- Ish Sodhi and Corey Anderson -- and dropped Tom Latham, Mark Gillespie, Neil Wagner, Dean Brownlie
