Mushfiqur Rahim scripted history after he became the all-time leading run-scorer for Bangladesh during the ongoing first Test match against India in Chennai on Saturday, September 21. The veteran wicketkeeper surpassed the legendary Tamim Iqbal to become the second run-scorer for Bangladesh with 15204 runs.

The 37-year-old Mushfqiur needed just one run in the second innings of the Chennai Test to create history. He scored 8 runs in the first innings to equal Tamim's tally and scored 13 runs in the second innings to surpass the former captain.

Most runs for Bangladesh in international cricket

  1. Mushfiqur Rahim - 15204 runs
  2. Tamim Iqbal - 15192 runs
  3. Shakib Al Hasan - 14664 runs
  4. Mahmudullah - 10694 runs

Mushfiqur needed 464 matches to break Tamim Iqbal's all-time record for Bangladesh while the latter was leading the chart with just 391 international matches. Notably, Tamim still leads as the top run-scorer for Bangladesh by 86 runs but those came while playing for the Asia XI team. Tamim remains out of contention to make a return to the national team due to his eventful relationship with the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh bowlers struggled to make an impact on Day 3 in Chennai as Indian batters Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant dominated the day with brilliant centuries. India declared their second innings on 287 for 4 and set a mammoth 515-run target for Bangladesh with more than two days of play remaining at MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Bangladesh were off to a promising start in their second innings with the openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam adding 62 runs for the first wicket. Jasprit Bumrah gave India a breakthrough in the 17th over with Zakir's wicket who scored 33 runs off 47 balls and then Bangladesh lost the momentum under the pressure of near-impossible chase.

Ravichandran Ashwin took the next three wickets but Bangladesh managed to keep the scoreboard moving with skipper Najmul Shanto scoring an unbeaten 51 runs off 60 balls at the end of the day. With Shanto and Shakib at the crease and Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz next to the bat, Bangladesh might look to stretch their second innings as long as possible on Day 4 in Chennai.
