Gavaskar played his last test against Pakistan in 1987 in Bangalore, scoring 96, that too on a turning track. Though Pakistan won the test but Gavaskar batting was a treat to watch on a difficult wicket.

In 1987 Gavaskar played  five tests. He scored 300 runs at an average of 42.85 in seven innings.. he also scored 735 runs in 18 ODIs at an average of 49.00 in the same year.

Just before retirement Gavaskar became the the first batsman to cross  10,000 runs in test cricket. He also scored his first century in ODI in his penultimate game.
