New Delhi: Born on 6 December 1988 in Navagam Ghed, Gujarat, Ravindra Jadeja belongs to a modest family. His father was a watchman in a security agency. He lost his mother at the age of 17. He has been the targets of many critics just a year back. He was the butt of all jokes — tagged with the popular but condescending moniker ‘Sir'. Some questioned his cricketing credentials too.But the latest ODI rankings must have shut the mouths of all his critics. In the latest ODI ratings, Ravindra Jadeja tops the charts for bowlers in ODIs and also secured second position on the all-rounders' list.Now everybody must have realized that he is a gem from the Indian cricket world. He has become the fourth Indian bowler after Kapil Dev in 1989, Maninder Singh from December 1987-November 1988 and Kumble to claim the No1 bowler spot in ODIs.Jadeja made his first Under-19 appearance for India in 2005 at the age of 16. He was picked in the Indian squad for the 2006 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. He was the vice captaion of the 2008 victorious U-19 Indian cricket World Cup team.Jadeja represents Saurashtra in first-class cricket, and Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.Jadeja caught the attention of the national selectors with his strong all-round showing in the 2008–09 Ranji Trophy. He was selected for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka on 8 February 2009 and scored an unbeaten 60 in that match. Jadeja took his place at No. 7 in the ODI team in late-2009.However, his Test debut came almost four years later. After his impressive performance at the start of Ranji Trophy season 2012–13 in which he scored two 300+ scores in 4 matches, he made his test debut in December 2012, against England at Nagpur in which he bowled 70 overs and picked 3/117.During the second ODI in the India-England series at Kochi, Jadeja smashed 61 off just 37 balls which took India to a total of 285. In the second innings he bowled a remarkable spell of 2 for 12 in 7 overs helping India beat England by 127 runs and level the series 1–1. This performance earned Jadeja the Man of the Match award.He established himself as an all-rounder in the historic 4-0 home Test series win against Australia in February–March 2013 by taking 24 wickets. His seven-wicket haul including a five-for in the second innings of the final Test match earned him the Man of the Match award too. He played an important role for India in lifting the ICC Champoins Trophy 2013.Though he could not manage too many wickets in the recently concluded bilateral series against Zimbabwe ,but still he was frugal in terms of economy rate. He took 5 wickets in 5 matches at 34.40 and economy of 3.51.
