Know about Wankhede stadium, Sachin's home ground

New Delhi: Seshrao Krushnarao Wankhede was a politician and cricket administrator of Mumbai, after whom the Wankhede stadium was named near Churchgate in South Mumbai. The ground is famous among cricket fans because of the fact that this is master blaster Sachin Tendulkar's homeground. It was here on November 16, 2013, Sachin Tendulkar retired from cricket after touching its pitch reverently after the match.The ground has an old history, it was built after disputes between the Cricket Club of India, which owns the Brabourne Stadium, and the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) over the allocation of tickets for cricket matches. The situation became worse after the Test between India and England in 1973.So, S.K. Wankhede, a politician and the then secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) built the new stadium in South Mumbai near the Churchgate station. It was built within six months and inaugurated in time for the final Test between India and the West Indies in 1975. Since then the Wankhede stadium has taken over from Brabourne Stadium as the main cricketing venue in the city.The first test played in the ground was between India and West Indies on 23-29 January 1975. On the other hand, the first ODI was played between India and Sri Lanka on 17th January 1987.Till now, Wankhede has hosted 24 international test matches and 19 international ODI matches. Moreover, Wankhede also witnessed three World Cup i.e; 1987, 1996 and 2011 final in which India won the cup.It is also a prominent ground for IPL and CLT20 matches.Now let's have a look at some facts related to this stadium: Its capacity is 45,000, has floodlights, and has two ends, Garware Pavilion End and Tata End.
