London: Openers Tom Latham and Martin Guptill were dug in as New Zealand went to lunch on 44 without loss after bowling out England for 389 on the second day of the first test at Lord's on Friday.
Guptill, playing his first test since New Zealand's last tour here two years ago, was lucky to be 26 not out, while Latham was 13 not out.
Just before the interval, Guptill was on 24 when he was caught at first slip after edging a ball by newcomer Mark Wood that angled in. But Guptill waited at the crease for the video replay, which showed Wood overstepped by millimeters, conceding a no ball.
That was the pacy Wood's third over in his England career, and he'd already had a couple of shouts for lbw and near misses.
Meanwhile, James Anderson was unable to find some swing in six overs as it clouded over ideally for him, while Stuart Broad asked a couple of questions of the batsmen.
Guptill, in-form and more of an attacker than Latham, had 26 off 51 balls, including three boundaries, and the wary Latham was 13 from 40, with two fours.
England was all out less than an hour into the second day, as New Zealand fast bowlers Trent Boult and Matt Henry finished with four wickets each.
England started the day on 354-7, and added only 35.
Boult took two quick wickets, inducing edges by Moeen Ali on 58, and Stuart Broad on 3, for catches behind the wickets.
Wood and Anderson frustrated New Zealand for six overs, scoring 21 runs, until Anderson gave a caught and bowled in Henry's first over of the day, replacing Tim Southee, who was loose again.
Henry, in his first innings for New Zealand, took 4-93, and Boult finished with 4-79.
