Christchurch: Injuries have forced comeback cricketer Jesse Ryder to withdraw from the New Zealand cricket team playing the West Indies here next week.

Ryder suffered two niggling injuries while scoring his second consecutive first class century for Otago against Canterbury this week, reports CMC.

He tweaked his left knee while bowling on the opening day at Rangiora and was also struck on the finger during his time at the crease, an injury that he aggravated while fielding in the slips.

While neither injury is considered serious, Ryder has withdrawn from the NZ selection as a precaution.

"With it being so early in the season, the decision has been made to let Jesse rest and fully recover," said Otago physio James Montgomery.

"This will give us the best opportunity of ensuring that neither injury develops into an ongoing concern."

Ryder will be replaced by Otago Volts captain Derek de Boorder.
