India vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test Highlights: Pant, Vihari score fifties; India 357/6 at stumps on Day 1

This is it from India TV's live blog for the India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Day 1. India are on top and will look to continue their dominance of Day 2 as well. We will be back with more updates from first Test, till then stay tuned with us for more updates.

Day 1

India lose six wickets to score 350 plus runs

Riding on the fifties by Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari India went on to score 357 runs with the loss of six wickets on Day 1 of the first Test against Sri Lanka here at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Friday. Pant missed out on a well deserved century by four runs as he scored 96 runs in 97 balls with the help of nine boundaries and four sixes. The second-highest scorer of the day for the host was Vihari who hit 58 runs in 128 balls batting at number 3. Virat Kohli scored 45 runs while Ravindra Jadeja is also batting on 45 at the end of Day 1. For visitors, Lasith Embuldeniya picked two wickets while Suranga Lakmal, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara and Dhananjaya de Silva chipped in with one wicket each.

India 337/6 after 82 overs: It's all been a Pant-show for a while now. He has gone all guns blazing against the visitor's bowling attack. Boundaries, sixes, and what not. Jadeja is happy to stay silent at the other end and just give Pant a strike. The crowd is standing to celebrate Pant's ton and we can expect it to come with another sixer from the southpaw. The Lankan bowlers look tired and clueless about Pant's ultimate hitting all over the ground. Rohit and co. would cross their fingers for Pant to not miss this golden opportunity with a rash shot. And, it happens again. Rishabh Pant misses his well-deserved century by just four runs. He doesn't want to leave the crease and he sits with his head down. Nevertheless, brilliant hitting and wonderful innings come to an end as he departs for 96 runs. R Ashwin joins Jadeja.

Rishabh Pant scored a quick fifty to keep India in a pole position.

India 310/5 after 77 overs: It's almost the same trend being followed in this Test match. Batsmen looking good, the bowling looking tired, and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, a wicket falling. Again, two batters have woven a good partnership after a departure. Jadeja has looked confident as if he was never out from cricket. He is showing full support to Pant who has scored another half-century in his test career. Jaddu can bat in a similar fashion but showing maturity to play as second fiddle for now. Pant is entering into the beast mode as he hit two consecutive sixes followed by a boundary to squeeze 22 runs off Embuldeniya's over. India have crossed the 300-run mark while Pant nearing his quick century.

In times of 3 formats, I played 100 Tests; next generation can take that from my career: Virat Kohli

India 260/5 after 71 overs: Wickets may fall on one end but it doesn't concern Rishabh Pant. He will come, play his big shots and keep scoring runs. Since his arrival, he has been into destructive mode only. Shreyas Iyer built an important partnership with Pant before returning to the pavilion. Iyer began in a similar fashion and continued his good run of form from the T20I series. But, the right-handed batter couldn't sustain for long and departed after forming a 50-run stand with his fellow mate. Ravindra Jadeja has joined in and will be playing in whites after a while. He needs to take his time and just keep supporting Pant at the other end. Pant is nearing his fifty and SL should aim for wickets of these batters before India jump the 300-run mark.

India 224/4 after 60 overs: India have done well to control the damage caused by that double strike from the Lankans. Shreyas Iyer is continuing his T20I form in this Test and looking to add more runs to his name. Rishabh Pant started off with a gigantic six against Embuldeniya. Pant is looking in his usual aggressive approach again and this could disturb SL. The duo has stitched a good partnership for the hosts and they are motoring India to a good score on Day 1. Let's see where can they take their team as the game progresses.

India 187/4 after 48.3 overs: Sri Lanka fighting back in this session as, after Kohli, they have managed to the wicket of well-settled Hanuma Vihari as well. Vihari was looking in superb touch as he added another half-century to his name. He was previously dropped on 56 and could add just two runs before getting dragged on by Fernando. India are in a state of bother now as they have lost two set batters in quick successions. Shreyas Iyer has walked in to join his former IPL teammate. Rohit would hope that Iyer carries his T20I series form in the longest form of the game.

India 175/3 after 46 overs: Kohli and Vihari have built a good partnership of 90 runs for the hosts. Vihari continues to impress with his scoring abilities consistently. While Kohli has shown us why he is playing his 100th test match as he quickly reaches his 40 in no time. Vihari in an attempt to steal a boundary hit that straight to the fielder but was favored by a dropped catch that too off a no-ball when he was on 56. Big shock for everyone as Virat Kohli departs so early after being settled in. Embuldeniya has got his side another breakthrough and this time the biggest of all. Silence is all over the ground as Virat walks back to the pavilion after scoring 45. Rishabh Pant comes in at No 5.

India 146/2 after 36 overs: India continue to move the scoreboard with ease as Vihari resumes his innings with a boundary post-lunch. Hanuma had already looked in good touch since the word go while Kohli has also settled down his nerves with time. Indian camp would want both these batters to play along for as long as possible and take the score across 200 with no further loss. The duo has complemented each other as they build a 50-run stand for the fourth wicket. Sri Lanka pacers will have to bowl tight lines to unsettle the batsmen as there are no real demons on the pitch. Vihari completes his fifth half-century in whites as he continues to question the selectors why he isn't the regular picks for the side.

Harbhajan Singh wishes Virat Kohli

Lunch Break:

India 109/2 after 26 overs: India is in a strong position at lunch. After Mayank's dismissal, it was a sight to watch when Virat Kohli entered the ground with so much love and wishes from the Punjabi crowd. Kohli started off his special inning with a leading edge and looked a bit uncomfortable in the beginning. He is taking his time as even he wants to score some big runs in this match against Lankans. Hanuma has looked really positive with some creamy cover drives. Both should look to complement each other and keep rotating the strike. India has lost both the openers and an interesting phase of the play lies ahead. Do join us in 40 mins.

India 91/2 after 20 overs: India's new No three Hanuma Vihari has joined well-settled Mayank Agarwal at the crease. Vihari should look to stitch a solid partnership for the third wicket and get his place cemented in this Indian Test side. Mayank has looked good till now and is prepared to go bonkers against the spinners. Hanuma is taking his sweet time to settle down at his new position for the hosts. Now, Embulduniya has provided the much-needed breakthrough for the visitors by getting Mayank plumb in front of the wickets. The crowd erupts as Virat Kohli runs down to the pitch to play in his 100th appearance in the whites. Emotional moment for the run-machine!

Kohli's 100th Test: Cricket legends wish Virat Kohli for achieving milestone

From Tendulkar to Ganguly, cricket legends have wished Virat Kohli for achieving a great feat when he comes out to play on Friday morning against Sri Lanka in the first of the two-match Test series.

India 53/1 after 10 overs: After seeing off the new ball from the Lankan's pacers, the Indian openers have played really well. They have hardly taken any risks in the first hour.  Rohit and Mayank are getting into their zones as the duo has already shared ten boundaries between them. Rohit was all fired up as he had scored two boundaries off the Kumara's over before miscuing his go-to pull-shot out to the fine-leg. India is one down after crossing the 50-run mark. Hanuma Vihari comes in at No 3 to join Mayank Agarwal.

Head Coach Rahul Dravid presents Virat Kohli with his 100th baggy blue for his 100th appearance in whites for India

India 23/0 after 5 overs: India is back with their old opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal. Rohit Sharma is playing his first Test match as a full-time skipper for India. After a cautious start from the Indian openers against some early swing from the Lankans, the duo has started to score some runs. They managed to get three boundaries from the second over from Vishwa Fernando. The visitors need to keep bowling tight lines against these dangerous batters as they both have a knack of scoring daddy hundreds once they get going. Both the openers should look to settle down and keep rotating strike. They would want to avoid any loss till lunch.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri wishes Virat Kohli for his memorable moment.

Both team captains' at the toss

Dimuth Karunaratne: We wanted to bat first as well. We are playing three seamers, but it is a good wicket to bat on. We have played 300 Tests but we never won in India. We have a good team, with the senior and junior combinations and we are prepared. We are going in with three seamers and two spinners.

Rohit Sharma: We are going to bat first. Similar Indian conditions, so it's important for us to put runs on the board and take it from there. It is a huge honour to be captaining India and be part of the list. It is something I never dreamt of. It has been quite buzzing. We know it is a special occasion. Not many people go on to play 100 Tests, and Virat has been looking forward to this game. We are playing three spinners and two seamers.
