India vs Ireland U19 World Cup 2022 Highlights: India beat Ireland by 174 runs; qualify for Super League
MATCH REPORT Following a strong batting show by Indian openers, which took India to a huge 308 runs, bowlers fired in unison to pack Ireland batting for 133 runs in just 39 overs for a massive 174 runs. The lopsided win guaranteed India's berth in the Super League phase as Kaushal Tambe, Vicky Ostwal and Garv Sangwan (two wickets each) ran through the Irish lower-order after Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Ravi Kumar polished the openers.
Among Indian batters, Harnoor Singh (88) was adjudged man of the match while Angkrish Raghuvanshi played the aggressor with a 79-run knock in the opening stand of 164 runs. Stand-in captain Nishant Sindhu's (34) effort must be acknowledged as well as he kept the scoreboard moving after both the openers departed. Last but not the least, Raj Bawa struggled during his 62-ball stay but did add those 42 runs in the middle overs.
Ireland 133 all out in 39 overs India beat Ireland by 174 runs and qualify for Super League phase. The last Irish wicket to fall was No. 11 Muzamil Sherzad, who was taken by Raj Bawa at deep mid-wicket. Bawa deserves all the praises for taking the blinder as he came running from deep mid-wicket and stretched full to take a diving catch to give Kaushal Tambe his second wicket of the match.
Ireland 129/9 in 38 overs OUT! Kaushal Tambe joins the party as well! clean bowls tailender Jamie Forbes, who made a hopeless attempt to go down the wicket while the spinner charged the ball in pre-reading Forbes's intentions.
Ireland 120/8 in 36 overs OUT! Gautam with his second wicket of the night and its Ireland's highest scorer Macbeth, whose outside edge was brilliantly taken by Bana behind the stumps. The 'keeper took the catch on the rebound after it hit him on the body first. MacBeth can take pride in the fact that he entertained the crowd with two fours and three sixes.
Ireland 118/7 in 35 overs MacBeth becomes the first Irish batter to enter the 30s and this should be a moral win for the side, who have put up a pedestrian display with the bat and ball both.
Ireland 105/7 in 31 overs OUT! Aneeshwar Gautam clean bowled McGuire there! India are just three wickets away from a win and virtually sealing their knockout spot. McGuire lost his wicket after pressing forward and looking to defend but the ball went through the gap between bat and pad to dismantle the woodwork.
Ireland 102/6 in 30 overs After giving away a maiden over to stand-in captain Nishant, MacBeth changed to an aggressive stance with a six and four in the 30th over against Vicky Ostwal, which took Ireland past 100-run mark.
Ireland 82/6 in 26 overs MacBeth and McGuire are looking to play out the remaining overs with no intentions to chase the required run rate.
Ireland 66/6 in 21.2 overs OUT! Vicky Ostwal joins the party with the wicket of Philippus le Roux, who was trapped lbw while measurably failing at a paddle sweep effort.
Ireland 66/5 in 20.4 overs OUT! Garv Sangwan at it again as he had a set Cox taken behind the stumps by keeper Dinesh Bana, who fumbled the ball first before collecting the catch in his 2nd attempt. Scott MacBeth walks in at No. 7.
Ireland 52/4 in 18 overs Runs hardly came since the last wicket until last-match centurion Joshua Cox shot two boundaries off Bawa in the last over to take his side past 50. The over did distort Bawa's bowling figures, as it reads 24 runs in five overs. Sangwan, from the other end, is not giving an inch with a consistent bowling line as just 7 runs came from the right-arm pacer's two overs.
Ireland 36/4 in 14.5 overs OUT! That's wicket number four for India as Garv Sangwan had Irish captain Tim Tector taken at gully by Kaushal Tambe. That's virtually game over for Ireland as Tector was able to score some runs while his partner Cox still looks uneasy at the other end. It now matter when and not how India are going to win this match.
Ireland 29/3 in 12 overs Nishant Sindhu introduced himself into the attack, along with Raj Bawa from the other end and the duo has further tighten the noose on Irish middle-order batters Joshua Cox and Tim Tector, who are struggling to find the boundaries.
Ireland 17/3 in 7 overs OUT! Excellent piece of fielding by Raj Bawa, who runs out opener David Vincent with a direct hit at the non-striker end from mid-on. The field Umpire did signal for the third umpire but it was quite evident that Vincent was never going to make it in time for that non-existent single.
Ireland 10/2 in 5 overs OUT! Hangargekar traps Jack Dickson lbw for nought. That's a wicket and a maiden over for the speedster. India seem in a hurry to wrap this up quickly.
Ireland 10/1 in 4 overs OUT! Ravi Kumar delivers the first blow to Ireland. Doherty lost his wicket in aim to clear the mid-wicket boundary. Doherty stepped out and lofted it high and initially it seemed it will clear the fences but the shot was against a strong wind, helping Vicky Ostwal to collect a nice running catch.
Ireland 4/0 in 3 overs Irish openers David Vincent and Liam Doherty have struggled to open up their arm against the Indian pacers Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Ravi Kumar with the latter being more effective in finding swing in windy conditions.
INNINGS BREAK Indian batters must pat their back for putting up a huge 308-run target on the board while a 220-plus total was deemed sufficient by the experts. Much of the credit goes to Harnoor Singh (88) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (79) for building a solid foundation by adding record 164 runs for the opening wicket. However, the score wouldn't have crossed 300 if not for Rajvardhan Hangargekar, who spiced up things at the end with five towering sixes. Stand-in captain Nishant Sindhu's (34) effort must be acknowledged as well as he kept the scoreboard moving after both the openers departed. Last but not the least, Raj Bawa struggled during his 62-ball stay but did add those 42 runs in the middle overs.
Irish bowlers, on the other hand, need to go back to the drawing board and rethink their bowling strategy for the matches ahead; especially in the opening overs. Left-arm orthodox Jamie Forbes was effective in the middle overs but lacked support from the other end. Pacer Muzamil Shehzad added some semblance to his figure with three wickets in the slog overs but his line and length were all over the place; something that Hangargekar exploited at the end.
India 307/5 in 50 overs Five sixes by Rajvardhan Hangargekar (39* off 17 balls) at the death, including three consecutive sixes in the last over takes India past 300. Despite taking a wicket in the last over, Shehzad concedes three sixes and a boundary in the final over. The momentum certainly swings back in India's favour.
India 284/5 in 49.1 overs OUT! Sehzad with his third! Kaushal Tambe exposed his leg stumps and the Irish pacer aims accurately with a fuller delivery. Dinesh Bana is the new man in.
India 266/4 in 47.2 overs OUT! Bawa is finally put out of his misery by pacer Muzamil Shehzad, who bowled out the young southpaw at 42 (64) with a full delivery for his second wicket. It's all down to newly-in Kaushal and Hangargekar to take India close to 300, if not above.
India 259/3 in 45.3 overs OUT! Stand-in captain Nishant departs after scoring a quick 30-ball 34. The southpaw deserves kudos for ticking the scoreboard while Bawa struggled to adjust to the conditions. Shehzad picks his first wicket as Nishant nicked the ball to keeper Cox behind the stump while looking to play the ball down the leg side.
STAT ALERT In the last 30 games that India scored 230-plus at the level, the four-time champions won 29 of them. The sole defeat came against South Africa.
India 255/2 in 44 overs Making good use of the last powerplay in the slog overs, Nishant and Bawa have now put up 50 runs for the third wicket. The stand-in skipper has been in charge of the partnership as he shot five boundaries so far while facing 31
India 212/2 in 39 overs Raj Bawa and Nishant Sindhu are dealing in 1s and 2s while aiming to avoid dot deliveries against the Irish bowling, who has taken pace off the ball. Being played 40-odd deliveries Bawa seemed more at comfort and is waiting for the lose odd balls to pounce on; so far ineffective as far as boundaries are concerned.
India 195/2 in 34.4 overs OUT! Harnoor misses out on his century as well; falls after scoring 101-ball 88. The southpaw went into a shell after Angkrish departed and that was evident during his fall when Harnoor missed the line of the delivery bowled by Matthew Humphreys, who deceived the Indian opener lbw with a flatter one. Stand-in captain Nishant Sindhu, another left-hander, joins Bawa in the middle.
India 177/1 in 30 overs Harnoor has gone a little bit quiet since losing his opening partner. With a new fellow southpaw in Bawa at the other end, he is aiming to negate the pressure that is being created by Ireland spinners led by Forbes.
India 164/1 in 25.4 overs OUT! Angkrish is caught behind after nicking a slider by left-arm orthodox Jamie Forbes. The right-handed batter, looking to punch it square through the off-side, was visibly left disappointed as he missed out on a well-deserved century by 21 runs in an innings that was laced with 10 fours and two towering sixes. Raj Bawa is the new man in at No. 3.
India 145/0 in 23 overs Angkrish and Harnoor seemed in total control of their innings as the duo could be seen sharing laughs at the end of the over as the former finished it with a boundary. Ireland are yet to think beyond their six specialist bowlers as India are on their way towards the 150-run mark without any trouble.
India 119/0 in 18 overs There was a message from the dressing room. Both the openers are not taking unwanted risks as India are without the service of their regular middle-order batsmen Yash Dhull and Shaik Rasheed. India are in a strong position and one of the openers need to make sure that the team post a big total on the board.
India 107/0 in 15 overs Harnoor racing towards fifty. Hundred up for India in just 15 overs. Harnoor has scored 43 in 41 balls while Raghuvanshi is batting on 57 in 51 balls. India are looking at a big total with both their openers going strong.
India 83/0 in 12 overs Raghuvanshi completes his fifty in style by hitting a six towards cow corner. He took just 42 balls to reach his half-century with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes. Harnoor is playing the anchor role. Spin from both the ends by Ireland as Liam Doherty and Matthew Humphreys are bowling at the moment.
India 57/0 in 9 overs 50 partnership up between Harnoor and Raghuvanshi. This is their second 50 plus partnership in the last five U19 games. Raghuvanshi dominated the spinners so far while Harnoor took charge against the pacers.
India 41/0 in 6 overs Angkrish Raghuvanshi has hit six boundaries in his 26-run knock so far while Harnoor Singh has also smashed three fours for his 14 runs. India is scoring at 7.08 runs per over. India will qualify for the quarter-finals if they win this game.
India 18/0 in 3 overs Angkrish Raghuvanshi hit Matthew Humphreys for three back to back boundaries to take India's score to 18 in the first three overs of the innings. Afghanistan born Muzamil Sherzad is bowling from the other end.
India opening batsmen Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Harnoor Singh are out in the middle while Ireland will be opening the bowling with left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys.
Both the teams are out in the middle for the national anthem of Ireland followed by India.
