IND vs AFG 1st T20I Highlights: Shivam Dube's all-round heroics boost India to big win in Mohali

That's it from us. India and Afghanistan next clash in the 2nd T20I at Indore's Holkar Cricket Stadium on Sunday, January 14. 

It was extremely cold to be honest. Now I am okay. Obviously when the ball hits the tip of the finger it is a little sore. When the ball hit my fingers I couldn't feel my fingers. (Summary) Lot of positives, especially with the ball. Wasn't the easiest of conditions but our spinners bowled particularly well. (Angry after getting out) Honestly these things happen. When it happens you feel frustrated because you want to be out there and score runs for your team. Wanted Gill to carry on. He played a good innings but got out. Lot of positives - Shivam Dube, the way Jitesh batted, Tilak as well and obviously Rinku. (Next game?) Want to try a few things. Want to make the bowlers do a few different things. Like how Washy bowled the 19th today. Keeping those things in mind, we'll try to do different things. But not at the cost of winning."

We were short 13-15 runs. We lost the toss too. But the boys fought well. We were trying to have a good powerplay start but we lost wickets then. One of us should've gone for 14-15 overs but we lost back to back wickets. When new batters came, we came under pressure. (Fielding effort) In the second innings there was dew and gripping of the ball was difficult. I can say that the boys tried really well. (Other areas of improvement) We will try to improve our fielding. We were quite lazy with the fielding today. We will try to improve batting as well. Bowling we have no issue. Will focus on what we did wrong today."

Shivam Dube claims the Player of the Matcha ward for his unbeaten match-winning knock and his impressive bowling spell. 

A dominant win by the Indian team despite an early setback while chasing a 159-run target. Shivam Dube turned out as a hero by scoring an unbeaten fifty and also made an impact while bowling with one wicket for nine.

Shivam Dube smashes Naveen-ul-Haq for a huge straight six and finished the game with a four. India record a six-wicket win with 15 balls remaining. Dube top-scored with 60* runs off just 40 balls. 

A second T20I fifty for Shivam Dube as Mumbai batter put India on track for a big win with a brilliant half-century in Mohali. India - 147/4 in 16.5 over. 

Shivam Dube and Rinku Singha dd 10 runs off Fazalhaq Farooqi in the 15th over as India enjoy control in Mohali. India - 131/4 in 15 overs.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman gives Afghanistan a breakthrough with Jitesh Sharma's wicket but it's a little late in the game. Jitesh scored 31 off 20 balls. India - 121/4 in 14 overs.

Jitesh Sharma and Shivam Dube add 12 runs off  Gulbadin Naib's first over of the game as India regain control in Mohali. India - 102/3 in 12 overs.

Runs continue to flow but the game remains balanced after 10 overs of play. Jitesh Sharma smashes Naveen for a big six over a fine leg to ease off some pressure. India - 83/2 in 10 overs.

What a catch by Gulabdin. Azmatullah Omarzai strikes in his first over and dismisses settled Tilak Varma who scored 26 runs off 22 balls.  India - 72/3 in 8.4 overs.

Another big over for India. Shivam Dube and Tilak Varma regain control by adding 14 runs off Naveen-ul-Haq. India - 66/2 in 8 overs. 

Shivam Dube and Tilak Varma finally accelerate the innings by scorching 16 runs off Mohammad Nabi after field restrictions were lifted. India - 52/2 in 7 overs.

Afghanistan bowlers look in complete control of the game as Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube struggle to add quick runs. India - 36/2 in 6 overs.

Shubman Gill suffers a stum out after walking out for a big shot off Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Gill scored 23 off 12 as India lose their second wicket with just 28 runs on the scoreboard in 3.5 overs. 

After a disastrous start, Indian batters Shubman Gill and Tilak Varma struggle for quick runs in the opening stages. India - 8/1 in 2 overs. 

A big blunder in the middle as Shubman Gill denies Rohit Sharma a single and the latter suffers a run out on the second ball of the game.

I wasn't feeling the ball, it was very cold. We knew it was winter and would be cold, but I was only thinking about my bowling, and how to put pressure on them. There was a lot of dew, but I focused on my accuracy.

Mukesh Kumar and Axar Patel took two wickets each but India managed to take only five wickets despite some help for the spinners. Ravi Bishnoi proves costly as he concedes 35 runs in 3 overs without any success. 

Despite conceding 15 runs in the last over, Arshdeep walks away with impressive figures of 28/0 in 4 overs, but no success. 

Afghanistan finish well after losing Omarzai and Nabi in the 18th over. Karim Janat and Najibullah Zadran added 28 runs off the last two overs. Afghanistan - 158/5 in 20 overs. 

Mukesh finishes the 18th over with a big wicket of Mohammad Nabi with Rinku Singh taking a diving catch at cover. Nabi scored 42 runs off 27 balls. Afghanistan - 130/5 in 18 overs.

Mukesh Kumar gives a big breakthrough in the form of Omarzai as the inside edge delivers clean bowled. Omarzai scored 29 runs off 22 balls. Afghanistan - 125/4 in 17.1 overs.

Arshdeep Singh returns for his second spell and conceded only 5 runs in the 17th over. Afghanistan - 125/3 in 17 overs. 

Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi add 50* runs off just 32 balls for the fourth wicket as Afghanistan slowly get back in the game. 

Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi scorch 16 runs off Ravi Bishnoi in the 15th over to drag their team past 100. Afghanistan - 105/3 in 15 overs.

Rohit Sharma gives his full effort but fails to collect the ball at covers. A chance goes missing. Afghanistan - 72/3 in 12 overs. 

Axar Patel bowls another economical over and bags Rahmat Shah's wicket as Indian bowlers enjoy dominance in middle overs. Afghanistan - 57/3 in 10 overs. Rahmat scored 3 runs in his debut T20I game.

Shivam Dube strikes in his first over and gets a big big wicket of Ibrahim Zadran. Afghanistan lose out early dominance as India take control. Ibrahim scored 25 off 22 balls. Afghanistan - 50/2 in 8.2 overs. 

Axar Patel provides a breakthrough as Jitesh Sharma stumps out Rahmanullah Gurbaz with a quick reaction behind the stumps. Gurbaz scored 23 off 28 balls. Afghanistan - 50/1 in 8 overs.

Afghanistan skipper Ibrahim Zadran smashes Washington Sundar for a maximum over midwicket to bring the first six of the match. Afghanistan - 44/0 in 7 overs.

Ibrahim Zadran eases off the pressure with a four off Mukesh Kumar on the last ball of the powerplay overs. Afghanistan struggle for big shots but avoids losing wickets in the powerplay. Afghanistan = 33/0 in 6 overs. 

Washington Sundar bowls a brilliant over as Indian bowlers keep Afghanistan openers quiet in powerplay overs. Afghanistan - 25/0 in 5 overs.

Shivam Dube drops z Ibrahim Zadran at mid-off as Arshdeep Singh concedes one four off Gurbaz to conclude a thrilling over. Afghanistan - 14/0 in 3 overs.

Players walk out to take the field after the national anthem as Mohali kicks off the first T20I. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran open innings for Afghanistan while Arshdeep Singh bowls first over.

I would've gone with bowl first had we won. No problem, we'll try to execute the plan in batting. This is a nice opportunity to gain some experience and generate momentum for the T20 World Cup. We are trying to play positive cricket and bring that confidence to the WC.

A lot to gain from these three games. We haven't had too much T20 cricket. Leading upto the WC we have IPL and stuff but an international game is international game. Trying to achieve what the team is heading to. I wasn't in the team for the entire last year, but I've been talking to Rahul bhai about what we are doing and understand what we need to do as a group. Winning is the most important thing. Sanju, Avesh, Jaiswal (who didn't pull up well) and Kuldeep are not playing.

The pitch offers a batting-friendly surface but pace bowlers might get help due to chilling weather in Mohali. 

Weather is expected to impact the game today. The temperature hovers around 12 to 8 degrees Celsius and both teams might witness fog and early dew. So, toss will play a crucial role in Mohali. 

Indian cricket team dominates the head-to-head record against Afghanistan in T20Is. India have won four of their five encounters against Afghanistan while the latest encounter in the Asian Games 2023 was abandoned due to rain in Hangzhou. 

Without Rashid, we will struggle as his experience is invaluable, but even in his absence, we have got quality spinners in Mujeeb [Ur Rahman], [Mohammad] Nabi, Noor [Ahmad] and Qais [Ahmad] All of them have played a lot of cricket, and we have trust in them.

As of now, we will be certainly opening with Rohit and Jaiswal. But when you have a squad, you have to have that flexibility to do whatever is required if that is in the best interest of the team and gives us the best chance to succeed. So, nothing is closed. But certainly, we're really happy with what Jaiswal has done as an opener for us, and he gives us a left-right combination as well at the top.
