London, Nov 28: Ashley Giles is replacing Andy Flower as head coach of England's limited-over cricket teams in a shake-up announced on Wednesday.
Former England spin bowler Giles is leaving his role as coach at Warwickshire, which he led to the English County Championship title in September, to take over the national one-day international and Twenty20 sides.
Flower, still in charge of the test side, will remain as team director and continue to be responsible for the preparation and playing strategies of all of the teams. But the change will take some of the pressure off Flower, who has been in sole control of England's test, ODI and T20 sides.
"The change in structure will provide a more efficient and sustainable use of coaching resources, ensuring that both coaches have an opportunity to prepare thoroughly for each series as well as interacting more regularly with other important areas of England cricket," the ECB said in a statement.
Giles will lead England on the limited-overs tours of India next month and New Zealand in February. Flower will take charge for the New Zealand leg of tests in March. Both remain as selectors.
Hugh Morris, managing director of England Cricket, said Giles will be the perfect complement to Flower as England prepare for a busy couple of years of all forms of cricket, including home and away Ashes series.
"Ashley has had considerable success as an international player and is a highly respected coach, and the players and England management are looking forward to working with him," Morris said.
He paid tribute to Flower's contribution and said he "will continue to be responsible for the development and implementation of the strategies needed to ensure we continue to improve."
Meanwhile, Kevin Pietersen has been named in England's one-day squad to face India in January but will not play England's two T20s against India before Christmas.
Pietersen announced his retirement from international limited-overs cricket six months ago, but has since reversed that decision after a difficult summer where he had contract wrangles with the ECB.
Alistair Cook retains the one-day captaincy for the five-match series while Stuart Broad will lead the T20 side in a two-match series with Surrey pace bowler Stuart Meaker the only player included in the squad not to have played a T20 for England.
The five-match ODI series begins on Jan. 11 in Rajkot.
