Colombo, Sri Lanka: The England and Sri Lanka cricket teams expressed their support for Australia batsman Phil Hughes, who was in a critical condition in a Sydney hospital after he was hit in the head by a ball.
Hughes, wearing a helmet, was struck behind his left ear when he attempted to pull a short-pitched delivery in a Sheffield Shield game. He underwent surgery and was in intensive care.
"The whole dressing room is massively concerned for Phillip, said England captain Alastair Cook.
"That tragedy, to happen on a cricket field, it has just taken us all by shock.
"We have guys who played with him from Worcestershire, Middlesex. Quite a few of us have played against him, too. I hope he can show the same fight he's shown his whole career."
Sri Lanka batsman Lahiru Thirimanne added: "We heard the news just after practice, it was shocking. He is a terrific player, our thoughts and prayers are with him."
The first of seven ODIs starts today.
