Johannesburg, May 11: Russell Domingo will become South Africa cricket coach when Gary Kirsten leaves the post after the Champions Trophy in June.
Domingo is currently an assistant with the Proteas and has worked for two years under Kirsten, who announced Friday that he is leaving to spend more time with his family.
The 38-year-old Domingo, who will be head coach in all three formats, says “this is a very big day in my life.”
His appointment by Cricket South Africa on Saturday came after Kirsten indicated in April that he wouldn't be staying on.
Domingo's first task will be to lead the Proteas on a limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka in July. He'll also have to protect South Africa's No. 1 ranking in tests in upcoming series against Pakistan, India and Australia.
