New Delhi: After surpassing Ganguly in most ODI away wins, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni registered yet another record with 9 consecutive World Cup wins started against West Indies in 2011.
Under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly, India earlier won 8 matches on the trot in World Cup 2003.
Dhoni also created a record by registering the most wins as an Indian captain in the history of World Cup cricket tournaments. He has now surpassed Kapil Dev with 12 wins, after India's commanding win by eight wickets against Ireland in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Pool B at the Seddon Park in Hamilton.
Kapil has 11 wins as the captain of the Indian cricket team. Mohammad Azharuddin is at the third spot in the list with 10 wins, followed by Sourav Ganguly with nine wins. Rahul Dravid and Srinivas Venkataraghavan have one win each.
The win against Ireland was the 5th consecutive win in the ongoing world cup. It was also the first time ever India bowled out their opposition for the fifth time in a row.
India beat Ireland by eight wickets to record their fifth win in as many World Cup Pool B matches in Hamilton on Tuesday. The defending champions bowled Ireland out for 259 in 49 overs before openers Shikhar Dhawan smashed 100 and partner Rohit Sharma 64 as India chased down the target in 36.5 overs on a batting-friendly pitch at Seddon Park.
The pair shared an Indian World Cup record opening stand of 174. Ireland, who batted after winning the toss, owed their total to a run-a-ball 75 from Niall O'Brien, while skipper William Porterfield made 67. Paceman Mohammad Shami finished with 3-41.
This victory ensured India, already in the last eight, finished at the top of Pool B while Ireland will likely need a win against Pakistan in their last pool match in Adelaide on March 15 to reach the quarter-finals.
Under Dhoni's leadership, India won all the major ICC title including 2007 World T20 in South Africa and the 2011 World Cup at home, besides the Champions Trophy in England in 2013.
He was also at the helm when India achieved the number one Test rankings.
India will remain at the top position in Group B. After Bangladesh stunned England in their group match, they are more likely to face India in the quarterfinals.
India next play Zimbabwe on Friday, March 14.
