New Delhi: India's Supreme Court constituted a new panel to probe spot-fixing allegations during the Indian Premier League while allowing the Board of Control for Cricket in India president Narainswamy Srinivasan to assume charge.
The court had restrained Srinivasan after his election for a third year in office last month as it was hearing a case from regional body Bihar Cricket Association, which contended he had been helping to exonerate his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan of charges related to spot-fixing.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday named former judge Mukul Mudgal to head the three-member panel that will complete the probe within four months.
The matter was heard by the Supreme Court after the Bombay High Court ruled that a previous two-member BCCI probe committee, which had cleared Meiyappan of all charges, had been formed illegally.
"The Supreme Court has said I can resume functioning so I'm quite happy because BCCI needs somebody," Srinivasan said. "The court has directly formed the new (probe) committee and I've nothing to do with it."
