Wellington, New Zealand: Former test opening batsman Bruce Edgar has been named New Zealand Cricket's new general manager of national selection.

The 56-year-old Edgar played 39 tests and 64 one-day internationals for New Zealand between 1978 and 1986. He replaces Australian Kim Littlejohn, who did not seek reappointment.

Edgar has recently been working in Australia as a financial consultant and was first approached to take a seat on the New Zealand Cricket board of directors. He was then recommended for the selection role by a panel headed by former test all-rounder Richard Hadlee.

Edgar will work closely with national coach Mike Hesson, who retains the power of veto over all selections.
