Dhaka: Bangladesh cricketer Alauddin Babu has set an world record after conceding 39 runs in one over at Elton Chigumbura in Dhaka Premier Division.
Alauddin, who has represented Bangladesh at under-19 level, was bowling the penultimate over for Abahani Limited in a 50-over Dhaka Premier Division match against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club when the record was set.
Bowling to former Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura, the seamer conceded five off the first ball, which was a no-ball, and then followed it up with a wide. He then went for 6, 4, 6, 4, 6 before sending down another wide and finishing off with a final maximum.
The 39-run total was the most runs conceded in an over in List A cricket (which includes all limited overs matches aside from Twenty20 matches), beating Netherlands leg spinner Dan van Bunge, who saw six sixes in an over struck by Herschelle Gibbs in the 2007 World Cup.
The runs conceded by Alauddin proved crucial as Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club's total of 282 for nine was enough to set up victory by 28 runs.
Sir Garry Sobers was the first cricketer to strike six sixes in a first class over when he hammered 36 runs off Malcolm Nash in 1968, a feat also matched by Ravi Shastri off a Tilak Raj over in 1984.
England's Stuart Broad has also suffered the indignity of going for six maximums in an over, when Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh put him to the sword in the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup.
