Sydney: Virat Kohli was dismissed for 147 as India avoided the follow-on and reached 407-7 at lunch on day four of the fourth test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.
Kohli added just seven runs to his overnight score before he clipped a Ryan Harris (1-71) delivery straight to Chris Rogers at midwicket.
The new India captain belted 20 boundaries in his 230 ball knock as the visitors narrowed the first innings deficit to 165 runs.
Wriddhiman Saha was other batsman dismissed in the morning session, being taken on the gloves fending at a Josh Hazlewood (1-58) short ball, and looping a catch to Steve Smith at slip.
At the interval, Ravi Ashwin was 33 not out, with Kumar Bhuvneshwar unbeaten on three.
The 26-year-old Kohli, who was appointed captain when Mahendra Singh Dhoni suddenly retired after the third test, has 646 runs for the series and has passed Rahul Dravid's record of 617 runs in a series (2003-04) by an Indian batsman in Australia.
Australia's woes in the field continued from the third day when Joe Burns at bat-pad dropped a chance from Kumar Bhuvneshwar off Nathan Lyon's bowling. Burns' moved awkwardly and lost balance as he grasped at the ball, grassing the chance with the tailender yet to score.
It was the third dropped catch of the innings for the hosts, after Smith dropped two chances Thursday, including one where the wires of the aerial television camera got in his eyeline.
Lokesh Rahul (110) scored his maiden century late on day three and Rohit Sharma made 53.
Australia declared its first innings at 572-7 just after tea Wednesday, with its top six batsmen all scoring above 50 for the first time, including centuries for Smith (117) and David Warner (101).
The hosts have an unassailable 2-0 series lead, and regained the Border-Gavaskar trophy, with two wins and a draw in the first three tests.
