Alastair Cook scored 51 before being trapped lbw to Johnson's reverse swing and soon after England's top order crumbled, losing three wickets for one run in five balls.
   
Michael Carberry was out lbw to Peter Siddle for 12. In the next over, Johnson added a run out to his 29 wickets this series when he gathered and fired in a direct hit from mid-off to find Joe Root (15) well out of his crease.
   
Ian Bell was out for a duck two balls later when he popped up a Nathan Lyon delivery to the waiting hands of Johnson at mid-off, leaving England looking vulnerable at 87-4.
   
Kevin Pietersen was on 14 with Ben Stokes on 13 at tea and will share most of the responsibility for pushing the lead past 300 and position England for its first win of the series.
   
Cook hit seven boundaries off 64 balls in his aggressive knock -- passing his 8,000th test run on the way -- in a confident start for England after Australia was dismissed for 204.
   
Starting the day on 164-9, Brad Haddin and Nathan Lyon added 40 runs for the final wicket to boost Australia's chances.
   
Haddin smashed a defiant 65 off 68 balls before becoming became Jimmy Anderson's (4-67) fourth wicket of the match, caught behind off a miscued pull. No. 11 batsman Lyon contributed an unbeaten 18 off 34 balls.
   
Batting at No. 7, Haddin has been by far Australia's most consistent batsman this series, producing innings of 94 and 53 in the first test, 118 in the second and 55 and 5 in the Ashes-clinching third test at Perth.
   
Anderson continued his resurgence in form after producing his best day with the ball this series on day two when he took three big wickets as part of a dominant England bowling display.
