Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag, who has earned a name for himself with 140-character commentary and birthday wishes on Twitter, on Tuesday had a new victim-Brian Charles Lara.
Lara, a legendary Caribbean batsman who has the record of highest individual Test score, turned 48 yesterday. A barrage of congratulatory messages and well wishes poured in for the Trinidadian but one wish stood out among them.
Sehwag’s wish had his signature touch, only that it also carried a hidden message.
“Happy Birthday @BrianLara . BC Lara, kya tha Maara,” Sehwag tweeted to Lara.
At first glance, BC Lara seemed to be the acronym of his first and middle name -- Brian Charles – but anyone with a sense of humour would think that BC stands for an expletive, quite common among Delhiites.
While some Twitter users found it funny, others noted that it was offensive to call the legendary batsman by such expletive.
Before jumping to conclusions, we leave it to Sehwag himself to tell what he meant by his tweet.
Until then, we would hold that it was an honest mistake on the part of Nawab of Najafgarh.
Meanwhile, we bring some of the Twitter reactions to Sehwag’s post.
Brian Lara, considered one of the greatest batsmen of his generation, scored 11953 runs from 131 Tests at an impressive average of 52.88 including 34 centuries. His highest individual score of 400 is still to be broken.
