Former India cricketers Virender Shewag and VVS Laxman on Thursday condemned the deadly terror attack on a CRPF convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district in which over 40 personnel lost their lives and many were left gravely injured.

"Really pained by the cowardly attack on our CRPF in J&K in which our brave men have been martyred. No words are enough to describe the pain. I wish a speedy recovery to those injured," Sehwag tweeted.

"Sad and pained to hear about the dastardly attack on our brave CRPF men in #Pulwama in which many of our jawans have been martyred. I pray for a quick and speedy recovery of those injured in the attack," Laxman wrote in a tweet.

The attack was carried out by a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist who rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the bus on which the CRPF personnel were travelling, causing a massive explosion which reduced the bus to a mangled heap of iron. Several other buses were also damaged in the attack.

More than 2,500 CRPF personnel were travelling in 78 buses from Jammu to Srinagar, many of them returning from leave to rejoin duty in the Valley, when they were ambushed on the Srinagar-Jammu highway in Awantipora.

The attack is one of the worst terror strikes in the state in recent years.
