Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar died at the age of 63 on Sunday. He was suffering from advanced pancreatic cancer since February last year. He breathed his last at his private residence near Panaji. Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to express his 'heartfelt condolences' for the nation's former Defence Minister.

The former Defence Minister's health, which has been fluctuating for a year, took a turn for the worse in the past two days. Several party leaders and allies in the state government had rushed to meet him on Saturday.

Soon after the news of Parrikar's demise spread, Sehwag wrote on his Twitter page: "Heartfelt condolences on the passing away of #ManoharParrikar ji. Om Shanti".

Earlier in the evening, the Chief Minister's Office had said that "Chief Minister @manoharparrikar's health condition is extremely critical. Doctors are trying their best".

Among the first to arrive at the chief minister's private residence was state Director General of Police Pranab Nanda. Police presence around the house was also increased.

Sehwag's yester-year's India teammate VVS Laxman too paid his tribute by posting: "Heartfelt condolences on the demise of #ManoharParrikar ji. My thoughts with his family and well-wishers. Om Shanti."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted: "Shri Manohar Parrikar was an unparalleled leader. A true patriot and exceptional administrator, he was admired by all. His impeccable service to nation will be remembered by generations. Deeply saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family & supporters. Om Shanti."
