Highlights, 2019 World Cup Final: England win maiden title via dramatic Super Over against New Zealand
The ODI cricket saw its first super over, and in a dramatic finish, it ended in a tie as well, and England clinched their first-ever World Cup title on boundary count.
New Zealand vs England, 2019 World Cup final: It took them 44 years, but England have finally done it. Neither a tied game, nor a spirited New Zealand could stop England from bringing the trophy home at the Lord's on Sunday. It finally took a Super Over for England to be crowned winners of the 2019 World Cup. Eoin Morgan's boys are the new world champions in the 50-over format of the gentleman's game and the crown couldn't have come at a better place than the historic Lord's, the home of cricket. Ben Stokes will go down in history as one of England's best all-rounders. After all, he managed what even the great Ian Botham failed to achieve in Australia in 1992. England beat New Zealand to win maiden World Cup title
" I'd like to commiserate Kane and his team. The example that they lead is hugely commendable to him and his team. On a tough wicket where everyone found it tough to score. Buttler and Stokes put together a partnership, and I thought that would take us deep, and it did. This has been a four-year- journey - and we find it hard to play on wickets like that. To get over the line today means the world to us. I was being cooled down by Plunkett, which isn't a good sign. Some of the support staff - not only the best in our team, but in the world, they really helped. Full credit to the two boys who went out for the super over, given that they were there most recently. Archer just improves every time he goes out there. Really incredible - everyone in the changeroom today, Willey, Billings, whoever missed out on the squad - I'd like to mention them too.
The England players now collect their mementoes," World Champion Eoin Morgan on winning the maiden WC title for his country
* It's time for the World Champions- England to receive their gold medal to win the World Cup title.
" We were thinking about overheads. We thought runs on the board - we would have liked 10-20 more. But in a World Cup final this was a competitive total. The bowlers really put the batsmen under pressure. It had to go down to the last ball, and then the last ball of the next little match, but a great match all around. It was a shame that the ball hit Stokes' bat, but I just hope it doesn't happen in moments like that. I don't wish to nitpick, just hope it never happens in such moments ever again. The left-hand right-hand combination was useful in the superover, looking at the short boundary, but it's unfair to critique a match fought with such small margins," Williamson said after receiving a silver medal.
* Runner-ups New Zealand players are called to receive their World Cup medals
00.27 IST: Player of the series awarded to Kane Williamson for his 578 runs in the tournament and leading his team to World Cup final.
"It certainly wasn't one extra run. There were so many moments that could've gone either way, but congratulations to England - they've had an incredible campaign and they deserve it. The pitches have been different to what was expected. No 300+ totals as expected. The NZ side showed a great amount of heart to get us to this point, but it just wasn't meant to be. The guys are shattered at the moment - it is devastating. It's pretty tough to swallow at this stage. But a fantastic effort from our guys," Kane Williamson said after receiving Man of the series award from great Sachin Tendulkar.
00.24 IST: Player of the match awarded to Ben Stokes for his brilliant knock of unbeaten 84 and couple of handy runs in super over.
*Loud cheers!* Pretty good innit? I'm pretty lost for words. All the hardwork that's gone on in these four years, and to execute with such a good game is unthinkable. Thanks to everyone for all the support. We just kept talking during the partnership with Jos, and the run-rate wasn't getting away, and in the last over when the ball hit the bat and went for four - I apologize to Kane for that. I definitely wasn't going to bowl the last over (laughs). It's fantastic, without the lads, the family, and the support, it's just been incredible," Ben Stokes said after winning the MOM trophy.
Jonny Bairstow: "Massive commiserations to the New Zealand boys. Edges one way, edges another. The way the guys came back in the Super Over was fantastic, and Stokes was huge. To play at Lord's is one thing, to play a World Cup final at Lord's is something else."
Joe Root: "It's almost written in the stars for Ben. Everything he's gone through, I can't be more proud and pleased for him."
Jos Buttler: "I thought I'd seen everything in cricket, and that game was just ridiculous. Hard to put it in words. We wanted to take it deep. We didn't feel like the run rate would be an issue if we were both there in the end. A couple of good partnerships, we'll chase this down. Trying to put pressure back on New Zealand. Don't know what happened there in the end. Unbelievable."
Liam Plunkett: "Hasn't sunk in yet. What a finish that was. Hats off to the Kiwi boys. Over the moon."
England players are on the field for some chit chat session with the commentators
* 242 however, did seem a challenging target as the wicket was not an easy one and England struggled throughout their innings. They lost Roy early. New Zealand then choked the runs and that pressure saw Root, Bairstow and Morgan get dismissed. Then though Buttler and Stokes started the fightback. A 100-plus runs stand saw them get on top of the game. Both got to half tons in the same over. However, the game once again changed in the 45th over when Buttler held out.
* It all began with a delay as the toss was pushed 15 minutes further which eventually was won by the Kiwis. They elected to bat. However, it wasn't a great day with the bat for them as they managed to crawl their way to 241 after exceptional efforts with the ball by Plunkett and Woakes. The Kiwi batters like, Nicholls who scored a half ton, Williamson and Latham did get off to starts but on one managed anything very significant.
* WHAT A GAME THIS WAS! Surely worthy of a final. Also, to remind you all, we still do not have a clear winner. Even the Super Over was a tie. England won as they hit more boundaries. For now let us summaries the game right from the start as it seems a long time from the start of the game.
00.04 IST: England are the new World Champions!
* Ball 6: Archer to Guptill, 1 run and run out. OUT! RUN OUT! Full on the pads, Guptill hits it towards deep mid-wicket and looks for two. The ball goes straight to the fielder. The throw at the keeper's end is a bad one but Buttler gets to the ball, stretches and dislodges the bails. Guptill is found short and ENGLAND WIN THE WORLD CUP!
* Ball 3: Archer to Neesham, 2 runs.
* Ball 2: Archer to Neesham, SIX! SIX! This one is out of here! Neesham has demolished it. Full on off, Neesham smashes it over the mid-wicket fence for a maximum. 7 needed in 4.

* Ball 1: Archer to Neesham, wide.
* A tough task awaits New Zealand. Their batters walking out are Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham.
*England have made complete use of the 6 balls they faced. They have set a target of 16 for New Zealand. This is going to be very difficult against Archer.
23.46 IST: Ball 6: Boult to Buttler, 4 runs. FOUR! Full toss on the pads, Buttler hits it over mid-wicket and gets a boundary. Excellent finish to the Super Over for England. England finish with 15.

23.43 IST: Ball 4: Boult to Stokes, 1 run. Full toss but cannot make the most of it. It is around off, Stokes hits it to covers and just gets a single.
23.43 IST: Ball 3: Boult to Stokes, 4 runs. FOUR! Just about beats the dibving long on fielder. Full on middle and leg, Stokes swings his bat at it and gets it wide of the long on fielder. The man fro, long on runs to his left and puts a dive but to no avail.

* It is Buttler and Stokes who are walking out to the middle. Trent Boult is will bowl the Super Over!
* This is unreal stuff! The finals of the World Cup has gone into the Super Over! Who would be happier at the moment? Surely England. However, it is them who will be batting first. Who will be three batters for them? Roy, Buttler and Stokes? Who will New Zealand give the ball too? We will find out.
23.32 IST: Trent Boult to Ben Stokes, OUT! He has not! WE HEAD INTO THE SUPER OVER! What an end to the game. A full toss on middle, this is hit down to long on. The batters take one, they go for the second. It is thrown to the bowler who collects it and whips the bails off. The umpire goes upstairs to check and replays show that Wood is way short.
23.30 IST: Trent Boult to Ben Stokes, OUT! RUN OUT! Just the single! 2 needed on the last ball. Full and outside off, Stokes hammers it down to long off and the batters take one. They go for the second. Santner throws it to the bowler who collects it and whips the bails off.
23.21 IST: Jimmy Neesham to Jofra Archer, OUT! KABOOM! A first-baller for Archer. He keeps it simple, it is on the stumps. Archer swings across the line. He misses, the ball hits the pads and the ball deflects onto the stumps. 15 needed in the last 6 balls.
23.20 IST: Jimmy Neesham to Ben Stokes, Boult has touched the ropes! SIX! This could probably be the game changing moment. Boult was very casual there, very casual. A slower one outside off, Stokes drags it towards wide long on. Boult there takes it inside the ropes, the momentum though takes him aback. He ends up touching the ropes and then throws it back towards Guptill. Too late by then as Martin signals it is a six.
23.18 IST: Jimmy Neesham to Liam Plunkett, OUT! Plunkett holes out! It is not just a wicket but a dot. Another delivery used up. It is now 22 from 9. A slower one on off, Plunkett looks to go downtown but fails to get the timing right. Boult at long off makes no mistake. However, the important thing is the batters have crossed. Stokes will be on strike.
23.13 IST: Trent Boult to Liam Plunkett, A single to end! Plunkett will be on strike in the next over. A yorker on middle, Liam jams it out to long on. Stokes runs the first one hard. Santner though gets to the ball quickly and they have to settle for one.
23.11 IST: Trent Boult to Ben Stokes, FOUR! What a shot! He has pierced the gap brilliantly! Perfect start to the over. Boult misses his length by just, it ends up being in the slot. Stokes whips it through mid-wicket and bags a boundary.
23.10 IST: Lockie Ferguson to Liam Plunkett, FOUR! This is handy, very handy from Plunkett! Anything from his bat, is just gold for England and a boundary is brilliant. It is full and on the pads, Liam whips it through mid-wicket and the ball races away to the fence.
* Liam Plunkett is the new man in. A dozen years on from his last ODI world cup, can he do it on the grandest stage here? 39 needed off 23 deliveries.
23.04 IST: Lockie Ferguson to Chris Woakes, OUT! Ferguson gets another one! Woakes fails to make an impact! Ideal start to the over. Credit to Tom Latham too. he made a difficult catch look easy. This is short and on middle, Woakes looks to heave it across the line but only gets a top edge. It goes behind to Latham who settles under it and takes it by tumbling forward.
* Jimmy Neesham is back on!
22.53 IST: Trent Boult to Ben Stokes, Brilliant delivery, a yorker and on middle, Stokes jams it down to long on for one. Stokes now get to his fifty. A very sedate celebration by him as he knows there is a still long way to go.
22.52 IST: Trent Boult to Jos Buttler, FOUR! Up and over! Fifty up for Buttler. He hasn't had a great tournament but comes to the fore in the Finals. Rightly called the man for the crisis for England. His job is yet not done though. This is very full and outside off, Buttler lofts it over covers and bags a boundary. Also, the 100-run stand is up. Outstanding. Probably the stand which wins England their first World Cup.
22.46 IST: Lockie Ferguson to Jos Buttler, Good cricket all around! Firstly, it is a very good dipping slower full ball on middle. Buttler had already moved across to play the paddle scoop. In the end he does well to deflect it away towards fine leg. The fielder there runs to his right, dives and saves two for his side.
22.43 IST: Jimmy Neesham to Ben Stokes, A single to end another good over. Back-to-back good ones for New Zealand. Shorter and outside off, this is slapped through covers for one. 65 needed in 48.
22.35 IST: Lockie Ferguson to Ben Stokes, A little too straight, Stokes works it through square leg and gets to the other end.
22.31 IST: Matt Henry to Jos Buttler, FOUR! Trademark Buttler! He brings out the paddle scoop. Despite the fine leg behind behind, he gets a boundary as he scoops it nice and fine. Spoils the over, 8 from it. 72 needed in 60.
22.24 IST: Lockie Ferguson to Ben Stokes, FOUR! Short boundary and it races away! Shorter in length and on middle, Stokes gets on top of the bounce and pulls it through mid-wicket. The ball races away.

22.15 IST: Matt Henry to Jos Buttler, NOT OUT! It indeed is going down leg! Not sure why they reviewed! It always looked like it would go down. New Zealand lose their review. This is fuller and on the pads, Buttler looks to flick but misses. A huge appeal but the umpire turns it down. Williamson is asking the question and his bowler asks him to review it. He does so but replays show that the on-field call is the right one.
22.08 IST: Mitchell Santner to Ben Stokes, The batsman rocks onto the back foot and punches the ball. The batsmen have run through for a single.
* DRINKS! England need 105 runs in 96 balls.
22.05 IST: Matt Henry to Ben Stokes, Just short! Stokes is guilty of closing the face of the bat early as he tries to flick. A soft leading edge is produced which falls short of the diving bowler. 8 from the over, a good one for England.
22.02 IST: Matt Henry to Ben Stokes, A single now! Fuller and outside off, Stokes strokes it through covers for one. 50-run stand up between two and it is a very important one. They know only half the job is done and they need to keep going.
21.57 IST: Mitchell Santner to Ben Stokes, Well fielded! It is Guptill again! on the stumps, Stokes pushes it towards mid on. Guptill at short mid-wicket dives to his right and stops it.
21.54 IST: Trent Boult to Jos Buttler, FOUR! In the air... but just wide! Shorter in length and outside off, Buttler hops, does not get on top of the bounce but manages to guide it wide of point and it races away to the fence. Welcome boundary.

21.50 IST: Trent Boult to Jos Buttler, Good length and around off, Jos stands tall and pushes it through covers for one.

* Jos Buttler is the new man in. Someone needs to steady the ship for England here. New Zealand piling on the pressure here.
21.22 IST: Jimmy Neesham to Eoin Morgan, OUT! THAT IS CLEAN AS A WHISTLE! Morgan has to walk back! Jimmy Neesham has started his spell off in dream fashion. However, a lot of credit here has to be given to Ferguson. He just finished his spell and now has put in a brilliant effort in the field. Morgan dances down the track and Neesham bowls it short and wide outside off. Eoin slaps it but does not keep it down. It seems as if, it would fall safe but Ferguson in the deep, runs in, dives forward and seems to have taken it. Neesham is not sure but Ferguson signals out as soon as he gets up.
21.16 IST: Colin de Grandhomme to Ben Stokes, FOUR! Too short and it is easy for Stokes. He comes down the track and Colin bangs it very short. Stokes pulls it through mid-wicket and the ball races away to the fence.
21.12 IST: Lockie Ferguson to Eoin Morgan, That is a brute of a delivery! It is short and a very well-directed one. Morgan looks to duck under it but it hits the helmet and goes to the keeper. A few Kiwi players are appealing but nothing from the umpire. The umpire then walks upto Morgan to ask whether he is fine and Morgan shows him the thumps up.
21.06 IST: Lockie Ferguson to Eoin Morgan, Another back of a length ball on off, Morgan pushes it through covers for one. 7 runs but a big wicket in the over. 169 needed in 180.
* The new batsman in is Ben Stokes.
21.02 IST: Lockie Ferguson to Jonny Bairstow, OUT! Drags it on! Jonny Bairstow is out of here. Ferguson has the last laugh. Another English batter who falls to a loose stroke. * Eoin Morgan is the new man in.
20.50 IST: Colin de Grandhomme to Joe Root, OUT! Caught behind! Colin de Grandhomme gets Root! Another loose stroke from Joe Root. The last two balls he faced, the shots he played, it was very uncharacteristic from him. De Grandhomme bowls this full and wide outside off. It is the sucker ball. Root is sucked into the stroke. He goes after it away from the body. The ball takes the outside edge and goes into the mitts of Latham. Body blow for England as Root is supposed to be the batter who everyone plays around. Game on here! 183 needed in 201 balls.

20.36 IST: Matt Henry to Jonny Bairstow, FOUR!
20.32 IST: Colin de Grandhomme to Joe Root, Played through mid-wicket by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single.
20.30 IST: Matt Henry to Joe Root, Loose shot! This is just outside off, not the ball you can cut. Root still looks to do so but is beaten.
20.28 IST: Colin de Grandhomme to Jonny Bairstow, DROPPED! It could have been a wicket maiden but instead is only a maiden. That should have been taken. Colin de Grandhomme is the culprit himself. * Joe Root is the next man in for England.
20.07 IST: Matt Henry to Jason Roy, OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Matt Henry has broken through. Once again he is the man who has provided the breakthrough for New Zealand with the new ball. A much-needed one and for once, England's opening stand does not account for a lot. This is another superb delivery. It is slightly fuller and then shapes away. Roy pushes at it but does so inside the line. The ball takes the outside edge goes low to Latham who takes it with a dive forward and across. Roy starts walking but the umpires want to check if it has carried and replays show it has.

19.40 IST: Trent Boult to Jason Roy, NOT OUT! That is umpire's call! The on-field call stays. A very good review by New Zealand. They do not lose it. A brilliant delivery to begin with by Boult. This starts on off and then this one comes back in. Roy looks to drive but misses to get hit on the pads. An appeal but the umpire shakes his head. New Zealand review and the replays show it to be clipping the leg pole. That could have gone either way. Top start to the chase.
* We are back for the chase! The Kiwi players are out in a huddle. They now make their way to the middle. The England openers, Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy, follow them. Trent Boult has the first new ball in hand and he will be bowling to Jason Roy. Here we go...

19.08 IST: Jofra Archer to Mitchell Santner, Santner makes room and Archer bowls it full. Santner hits it towards cover and takes off. The fielder has a shy at the non-striker's end but misses. Santner did dive in but seems to have hurt himself. He is fine though.
19.07 IST: Chris Woakes to Matt Henry, FOUR! Henry comes out and hits it first ball for a much-needed boundary. He had no problems against the slower one. He waits for it and hen whacks it over the mid-wicket fielder and into the fence. A huge over this, 13 from it. 12 needed now for 250.
* The next batsman in is Matt Henry. New Zealand crumbling here at the death.
19.02 IST: Chris Woakes to Tom Latham, OUT! Another soft dismissal! No fifty for Latham. A slower full toss outside off, Latham looks to loft it over mid off but is early in the shot. * Mitchell Santner is the next batsman in.
18.55 IST: Chris Woakes to Colin de Grandhomme, OUT! In the air... taken! Colin de Grandhomme's struggle comes to an end. He just never timed the ball that well and now departs. A leading edge is induced which lobs to mid off where Vince, the sub, takes an easy catch.
18.48 IST: Jofra Archer to Colin de Grandhomme, Safe! Colin de Grandhomme is just not looking comfortable out there. This is short and on the body. Colin looks to pull but is hurried into the stroke. It hits his glove first, then the back of the bat and lobs short of the keeper. Dot.

18.16 IST: Liam Plunkett to Jimmy Neesham, OUT! CAUGHT! Neesham has thrown it away! This is a soft, soft dismissal. Neesham will be very disappointed with himself. Once again it is Plunkett who is the partnership breaker. His third of the night. It is another scrambled seam delivery and is it on middle. Neesham looks to go over mid on. The idea was right but the execution and the timing was not there. It goes straight to Root there who makes no mistake.
18.10 IST: Liam Plunkett to Jimmy Neesham, A swing and a miss! Good length and around off, Neesham looks to heave it over the leg side but misses.
18.05 IST: Liam Plunkett to Tom Latham, FOUR! Class, that shot was pure class! This is a length ball around off, Latham just plants his front foot forward and just pushes it past covers. It races away. Ideal start to the over. They need to make use of it.

14.55 IST: Captains at toss:
Williamson: We're having a bat. Tough decision. A bat-first surface, but the overhead conditions do make it confusing. We have a job first up with the bat. We're playing the same team. The semi was a tough scrap for both sides, but we're happy we got across the line in that game. Always backing Guptill with the bat. He'll go and play with the freedom. Our team has played with a lot of heart and fight and has gotten us across the line so many times.
Morgan: It was a 50-50 call. The overheads will lean towards the ball. Whichever side plays better will lift the trophy. Jonny is fully fit, and we're playing the same XI. The strongest part in Edgbaston was our bowling. If we can put our ball in the areas early on today, we are in with a great chance. I'm extremely proud. Everyone has put in the hardwork over the last four years. We have embraced pressure throughout the tournament, and the semi-final epitomized that.
