Opener Murali Vijay was on Monday recalled into the Indian squad in place of Abhinav Mukund for the first two Tests of the three-match series against Sri Lanka, beginning November 16 in Kolkata.

Vijay, who had suffered a wrist injury during Australia's tour of India, had to miss the 10th edition of the Indian Premier League as he underwent a wrist surgery in London and has since been spending time recuperating and following the rehabilitation programme prescribed to him.

The Tamil Nadu batsman has played 51 Tests so far and has also featured in 17 ODIs and nine T20 Internationals.

Meanwhile, the board also appointed Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain of the team.

Apart from Vijay, openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan have also retained their places.

Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav have been named as the three spinners while Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav Ishant Sharma are the four fast bowlers.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya has also retained his place in the team as fifth fast bowling option.

"With regard to Virat Kohli there has been some speculation that he's going to be rested for the whole of Sri Lanka series. It's not right. Yes, as far as Test series is concerned, he's going to play and at some point of time, the rotation policy that we're following will also apply to the captain. We're also monitoring his workload - he's been playing continuously right from the IPL. We need to give him a break and we will consider after the Test series," India's chairman of selectors, MSK Prasad, said.

"Considering the workload and considering the international schedule we have right now, we are definitely rotating the players.

"And it is too premature to say right now [who will be rested]. If you see the pattern with which we are selecting and we will let you know at an appropriate time. One thing is for sure that we are definitely going to rotate and monitor the workload of the players," he added.
