Going through a recent turmoil after Anil Kumble’s sudden exit from the post of Indian team’s coach, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited some more applications for the chief role. An alleged rift and continuous differences with skipper Virat Kohli have led to Kumble’s infamous departure from the post of head coach.
The legendary leg-spinner also revealed that Kohli had reservations about his 'style' of functioning.
So far, the likes of Virender Sehwag, Richard Pybus, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput and Dodda Ganesh have applied for the post of India's head coach. Another interesting name to crop up in the list is of Sri Lanka’s former skipper Mahela Jayawardene who is widely considered as a legend of the gentlemen’s game.
However, the Sri Lankan batting maestro cleared the air about the reports of him contending for the top post. On his official Twitter account, the 40-year old simply put a rest to all the speculations about him applying for the coach’s role of the Indian team.
Speaking more about it, Jayawardene said he is presently not much interested in any full-time job and would rather like to concentrate on his current responsibilities. The Sri Lankan legend is at present associated with IPL franchise Mumbai Indians and BPL side Khulna Titans as the head coach.
Whereas, on the other hand, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Thilanga Sumathipala has said that Mahela Jayawardene is still short of experience to take over as head coach of Sri Lanka national team after the exit of Graham Ford.
"Mahela is still short of experience as a senior coach, he may be good as a T20 batting or a fielding coach," Sumathipala told the local Neth FM radio.
The former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, his team-mate Scott Styris and Tom Moody, who was previously the head coach, are the names being floated around as likely successor to Ford.
Sri Lanka has had some nine interim and permanent coaches since 2011.
