Gayle had scored 733 runs in 14 matches in the 2012 edition of the league. Michael Hussey from Chennai Super Kings also scored 733 runs in IPL 2013 but took 17 innings to reach the landmark. On the other hand, Kohli took just 12 innings to break the record.

Having scored 752 runs in IPL 2016 so far, Kohli’s scores in the tournament read: 75, 79, 33, 80, 100, 14, 52, 108, 20, 7, 109 and 75.

Kohli, who has been in an extravagant batting form is this season, earlier surpassed Robin Uthappa’s record for most runs by an Indian batsman in a single IPL season during his innings of 109 runs off just 55 balls against Gujarat Lions. In the same match, he also became the first batsman ever to smash three centuries in a single season.

He also became the first captain to score 500-plus runs in three different IPL seasons. Doing so, he broke Sachin Tendulkar’s who had achieved the landmark twice. As captain of Mumbai Indians, he had scored 618 runs in the 2010 edition and 553 runs in IPL 2011.

Moreover, Kohli, during his 52-run inning against Kolkata Knight Riders, surpassed Suresh Raina’s record for most runs by an Indian batsman in T20 cricket in a year. Having scored 1377 runs so far this year, Kohli smashed Raina’s record of 1042 runs which he scored in 2010.
