Gavaskar was the first test batsmen to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket and considerably also known as one the greatest opening batsmen in cricket history. Gavaskar set world records during his career for the most Test runs and century that was scored by any batsmen.

Gavaskar broke the record of Don Bradman who held the record of 29 centuries with his outstanding 34 centuries. It was till Sunil packed his bags in 1987 that the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar broke his record in Test cricket in 2005. The young blaster had a unique technique against fast bowling which was highly admired by the batsmen and bowlers as well. Sunil had a high average of 65.45 against the West Indies who possessed a four-pronged fast bowling attack which was regarded as the most vicious in Test history.

Gavaskar is also the recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan and was also awarded the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award for Cricket in India in 2012.

Sunil Gavaskar is well known now for his commentary and match reviews and previews on screen as the Supreme Court had appointed him to relinquish a job of Cricket Commentary alongside overseeing the 7th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as an interim in the BCCI.

After retirement, the icon took out time to write and has published a few books on cricket such as ‘Sunny Days: Autobiography’, ‘Idols, Runs and Ruins’ and ‘One Day Wonders’.
