Ex-Test batsman Chris Rogers has been hired as Cricket Australia's high performance coach, with his role helping to develop the next generation of international players.

Cricket Australia announced the appointment Wednesday, saying Rogers will be based in Brisbane at the National Cricket Centre.

"We're excited to have Chris on board, and know he will be an outstanding addition to our coaching team," said CA's Team Performance executive general manager Pat Howard to cricket.com.au.

"Chris brings thoughtfulness, persistence and passion to the role and combines this with a strong intellect. He has a wealth of cricket experience that will be invaluable to the players he will be working with. He enjoyed a successful career at both international and first-class level, succeeding in Australia and overseas.

"From a coaching perspective, Chris has already been involved in roles with Cricket Australia's pathways program.

"We're looking forward to having Chris work with Australia's next generation and watching him develop as a coach. We are confident he can have a big impact in moulding our rising stars into future international cricketers."

The 40-year-old Rogers had a first-class career in Australia and England spanning almost two decades and more than 300 matches. He scored five Test centuries in 25 matches, with an average of 42.87, and featured in Ashes success on home soil in 2013-14.

Rogers has been involved in multiple coaching roles with Cricket Australia since 2015, most recently as an assistant coach at the under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

He will start in May on a contract running until mid-2020.
