New Delhi: Former Indian opener Arun Lal, who later emerged as a regular cricket commentator, is recovering after undergoing treatment for jaw cancer.

Recuperating after the surgery at a Kolkata hospital, the 59-year-old confirmed to a leading daily that he is on the recovery path after a successful surgery.

“It’s a rare and dangerous cancer. The symptoms were detected in time (in January) before I went through a rigorous treatment process. Thank God, I have been able to hold my place,” he was quoted as saying.

Arun underwent a 14-hour- long process of surgery where his jaw was replaced and thanked the doctors for their fantastic job which offered him a new lease of life.

The player who played 16 tests and 13 ODIs is hopeful of making his return to the commentary box. He expects that to happen over the next two months.

Apart from playing in tests and ODIs he also represented Delhi and Bengal in the Ranji trophy with an amazing total of 6763 runs in the domestic arena.

“I got calls from close friends,” said Arun. There were many who reached to Arun and Yuvraj Singh, who fought a similar battle against cancer in 2011 and made a comeback to international cricket, was one of them.

“I know what it feels like because I have been through this. It’s nice if you can share someone’s pain and help him overcome it. I always try to understand the mindset of the patient because it mentally defeats you,” said Yuvraj.
