England Cricket have named their playing XI against India for the 3rd Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham and surprisingly, Ben Stokes makes his return to the squad as he comes in place of youngster Sam Curran for the penultimate clash. The hosts lead the five-match rubber 2-0.
The only change made is Stokes for Curran, as Chris Woakes cements his place in the playing XI after his masterclass at Lord's where he scored his maiden ton to help England humble India by an innings an 159 runs.
"It was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make as captain. It’s about us as a squad delivering over five games and on this occasion Sam is unfortunate to miss out," said Roots, according to England Cricket.
Stokes was found not guilty on Tuesday after stating during his trial that he was acting in self-defence when he knocked out two men in a street fight in Bristol.
After being cleared of all charges by the Bristol court, Stokes makes his way into the playing XI for the Nottingham Test.
"Ben is desperate to get back playing cricket. He’s desperate to get out there, put in performances and concentrate on his cricket now. He feels ready to play."
England coach Trevor Bayliss said "a collective decision" was taken to reintroduce Stokes, who was omitted when an unchanged squad for the third Test was named on Monday.
Curran, 20, was named Man of the Match after the first Test at Edgbaston, having taken five wickets and scoring 87 runs. England lead the five-match series 2-0 and if they win the 3rd Test at Nottingham, the hosts will clinch the series.
