New Delhi, May 23: Strongly backing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi Wednesday said he has been carrying out his responsibilities with "great dignity" in the face of "unrelenting hostility" and the alliance stood solidly by him.
"The PM (prime minister) is carrying out his responsibility with great dignity in the face of unrelenting hostility and abuse from the opposition," Gandhi said at a function to celebrate four years of the United Progressive Alliance-II government.
"We respect him and we all stand by him," she added to loud applause.
Gandhi's remarks come in the background of a strident attack by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the prime minister. On Wednesday too, the BJP trained its guns on Manmohan Singh and said he was leader "neither of his party nor the country".
