Hyderabad, June 10: West Bengal Left Front Chairman Biman Bose today wondered as to how the Mamata Banerjee government issue an ordinance to reclaim 400 acres of land at Tata Motors' abandoned site in Singur for returning to unwilling farmers when the Assembly was in session. “I have heard about the ordinance, what I can say is that ordinance during the Assembly Session can't be taken up.
According to Article 213 of Indian Constitution, it is not possible. On how did it happen, we have to take information properly,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the CPI(M) Central Committee and politburo meeting here. After the ordinance was issued yesterday, Banerjee had said, “We are happy at the ordinance. The rest 600 acres will be kept open for industry... The Tatas can set up industry if they want.”
The politburo meeting of CPI(M) began earlier in the day and former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Battacharya did not come for the meeting, Bose said. Bhattacharya could not attend the meeting in Hyderabad as he was not keeping well, he said.
The three-day meet would discuss Left's poll debacle in Kerala and West Bengal, the corruption issue and the proposed hike in petro products, among other issues. The politburo also condoled the death of painter M S Hussain.
“It is most unfortunate that Hussain had to stay away from India in a self imposed exile since 2006. The CPI-M had steadfastly protested against the harassment of Hussain by the Hindutava communal forces,” a statement released by the CPI-M said.
“It is a pity that the government of the day did not yield the voice of powerful solidarity in the country to facilitate the return of Hussain to India. His death must galvanise the movement to safeguard and strengthen the syncretic civilisational ethos of India,” it added. PTI
