Ghaziabad, Jan 11: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yaday yesterday announced Rs 20 lakh compensation for the next of the kin of an army jawan who was killed recently near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Recently two jawans were killed near the LoC. We condemn this incident. One of the jawans belonged to a village from Mathura. We will soon provide Rs 20 lakh to the bereaved family," Akhilesh told reporters here.

The chief minister was here to attend the closing ceremony of a national-level weightlifting championship.

On January 8, the two soldiers -- Lance Naik Hemraj and Lance Naik Sudhakar Singh -- were killed near the LoC by Pakistani troops. The jawans belonged to 13 Rajputana Rifles.

29-year-old Hemraj hailed from Shernagar village in Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh. Hemraj is survived by his wife, mother, two daughters and son besides two brothers. His father had expired two years ago.
