8. K. Kamraj: A freedom fighter turned politician Kamraj contributed a lot to Indian politics despite being uneducated. Kamraj was born in a poor family and had to drop his studies in order to take up a job to support his family. He was  part of many freedom struggles through the Indian National Congress  and while in jail, he tried to learn English. He later became the chief minister of  Tamil Nadu in 1954 and later the Congress president during the turbulent Sixties. One word he always used to say was "Vanakkam" (namaskar) in Tamil.
