New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi will lead a march of party leaders to Rashtrapati Bhavan today to appeal to President Pranab Mukherjee to use his constitutional powers to end the 'atmosphere of intolerance'.

The Congress leaders will march from Parliament House to Rashtrapati Bhavan, a party leader said, adding that the delegation will request the President to invoke his constitutional powers to stem the 'atmosphere of intolerance'.

It should be noted that the President has already sought to underline need to preserve India's core values of diversity, tolerance, and plurality of Indian civilisation.

The Congress march comes in the backdrop of protests from intellectuals, academics, filmmakers, scientists and business leaders, some of whom have returned state and national awards as a mark of dissent.

Members of the Congress Working Committee, AICC general secretaries and office-bearers and party MPs will be part of the delegation meeting the President.

Yesterday evening, Sonia had a meeting with President at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. She was with the President for about half-an-hour during which they are understood to have discussed the current political situation. Congress sources, however, described it as a courtesy call.

Sonia had led a march of opposition leaders to Rashtrapati Bhavan during the Budget Session earlier this year to protest against the controversial land ordinance which was dubbed by the Congress as 'anti-farmer' and 'pro-corporate'.
