New Delhi, Mar 16: India's foreign minister Salman Khurshid is of the opinion that any effort to link the Congress president Sonia Gandhi to the Italian marines issue is totally unfair.
"It is extremely unfair to link Sonia Gandhi to the marines issue. The issue isn't over yet and the government is waiting to see what happens on Monday in the Supreme Court, when the hearing in the case resumes,” remarked Khurshid.
Khurshid pointed out that the Italian ambassador, Daniele Mancini, would not be detained as he enjoys diplomatic immunity.
"There is no detention of the Italian envoy. He is free to move," Khurshid said.
It should be recalled that Supreme Court of India had issued a directive on Thursday restraining Mancini from leaving the country and on Friday, airports were alerted to prevent the diplomat from leaving India.
India's relation with Italy suffered a major setback when Italy refused to send back the two marines accused of killing two Kerala fishermen for trial in India. The two had been allowed four-week leave by the Supreme Court to vote in the Italian elections. Their leave ends on March 22.
