New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi today congratulated Myanmar's pro-democracy crusader Aung San Suu Kyi for her party's landslide victory in the historic parliamentary polls there.
Gandhi remembered her "long struggle and steadfast commitment" to the cause of democracy and underlined the deep relationship shared between the Congress party and Suu Kyi. She expressed hope that these elections will open an irreversible path towards democracy in Myanmar.
Recording her appreciation for the incumbent President Thein Sein, Gandhi said that without his statesman like leadership and guidance, this democratic transition would not have been possible.
Party vice president Rahul Gandhi said that Suu Kyi shares a special bond with India that goes back a long way.
"Congratulations to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi & the NLD on their historic win. Her victory marks a new era for Myanmar. I wish her the very best. I hope under her leadership India & Myanmar continue to draw closer," Rahul said on Twitter.
Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) has swept elections as per as incoming results from the polls.
Myanmar, considered one of India's strategic neighbours, shares a 1,640 km long border with a number of North Eastern states including militancy-infested Nagaland and Manipur.
