New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected Delhi MLA Somnath Bharti's anticipatory bail plea and asked him to surrender today in a domestic violence case.
Sending a stern message the apex court said, If you are a responsible citizen, then don't run away,Surrender first and then come to court."
The apex court will only hear the matter on October 1 if Bharti complies with the order and surrenders.
“Yes, he has been asked to surrender. I will inform my client as soon as I establish contact,”Vijay Aggarwal, Bharti's lawyer told reporters this noon.
Bharti was seeking protection from arrest in a domestic violence and attempt to murder case in which the Delhi High Court had earlier rejected his petition for anticipatory bail.
A bench of Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice Amitava Roy had on Thursday fixed the matter for hearing on September 28 after senior advocate Pramod Swaroop, appearing for Bharti, mentioned the petition before it.
Lipika ( Bharti's wife) had filed a complaint of domestic violence with Delhi Commission for Women on June 10 alleging that her husband had been abusing her since their marriage in 2010. She had also given a complaint to the police in this regard.
