New Delhi: After a controversy erupted over his remarks eulogizing Nathuram Godse, the man who gunned down Mahatma Gandhi, BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj has gone back on his words and now says that he doesn't consider Godse a patriot.

“If I said something by mistake I take it back, I dont consider Nathuram Godse a patriot,” said  Sakshi Maharaj.

“It's a free country. A person can worship even a stone as god. What can I do? So, if anybody is celebrating Nathuram Godse shaurya divas, I can't do anything,” added Sakshi Maharaj.

Earlier, the BJP MP had created uproar by saying that after reading Nathuram Godse's last statement in court, one feels he had real pain in his heart for the nation.

"He may have been angry with Mahatma Gandhi at that point of time, but we was not a traitor", Sakshi Maharaj had said.

The Rajya Sabha today witnessed uproar when Congress member Husain Dalwai informed the house that an outfit in Maharashtra was celebrating "Nathuram Godse shaurya divas (bravery day)", and the state government had not taken any steps to stop this. He also informed the upper house that at least two state legislators were in the list of invitees.

It should be recalled that Nathuram Godse had shot dead Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948. He was later hanged till death.
