New Delhi: The legendary economist does not depend on any introduction. Manmohan Singh, not only is he the first Sikh to hold the office of Indian Prime Minister but also the only Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to return to office after completion of his tenure.Manmohan in younger daysBorn in Gah, which is now a part of Pakistan, Singh's family was one of those families who had to migrate to India during partition in 1947. Singh was a brilliant student all through his academic life. He attended Hindu College and Punjab University and attained his masters in Economics. He was appointed as the Finance Minister by then Prime Minister P.V Narsimha Rao. Singh introduced several reforms that helped the plunging economy of India to recover. But despite Manmohan Singh's radical reforms, Congress failed miserably in the 1996 general elections. Manmohan Singh next, became the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's rule.Subsequently, in 2004, when UPA won general elections, to everyone's surprise, the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi renounced the post of prime minister and announced Manmohan Singh the next PM of India. In 1958, Manmohan Singh married Gursharan Kaur and together they have three daughters, Upinder Singh, Daman Singh and Amrit Singh.Their eldest daughter is professor at the Delhi university and has written six books till now. Their second daughter Daman Singh is a St. Stephen's graduate and attended Institute of Rural Management in Gujarat. She has also penned down few pieces of literature.
