During this period Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor suffered from financial crisis as she had to support her family, pay off her husband's debts and had to cater to her son.
She shifted to Canada as it had excellent medical facility. Her son needed speech therapy. She hoped that her earnings would increase there too and that she would have better future prospects.
Sunanda had to keep shuffling jobs and struggle for her living. She moved back to Dubai on a Canadian passport in 2004.
She began working with TECOM investments to work on the International Media Production Zone.
Through this she was able to generate decent income and thus became financially stable.
