In 2008, CBI filed a chargesheet in which Chautala along with his son and Indian Lok Dal leaders were booked for illegally recruiting 3206 teachers in the period 1999-2000. The chargesheet stated that the original list was changed deliberately by inviting chairpersons of district level selection committee from 18 districts to Haryana Bhawan in Chandigarh and NCR. The chargesheet also booked Chautala and his son for appointing teachers on forged documents.
Apart from the Chuatalas, Sanjiv Kumar, who played a crucial role in bringing the scam into limelight, was also convicted. Interestingly, a total of 62 people were chargesheeted out of which 6 died during the trial period. 1 person was discharged by the court at the time of framing of charges. Out of 55 convicted persons, 15 are women.
After 4 years of humdrum trial, Chuatalas were finally convicted and taken into custody on Jan 17. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on January 22.
