Mumbai, Apr 26 : Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray today said that devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan is a clear indication of the threats that nuclear power plants bear on environment and human life.

Talking to reporters here, Uddhav reiterated his party's strong opposition to the proposed 9900 MW Nuclear Power project in Jaitapur in coastal Ratnagiri district.

“If the central government's think tank still feels that they should go ahead with Jaitapur, they should visit Japan to assess the situation,” he said.

Demanding that the project be shifted out of Maharashtra, Uddhav said that “In any case, the state will get only some portion of the electricity generated from there”.  Even though the state will get a little share, the Centre wants to set up the huge project here. This is nothing but cheating.  Maharashtra is capable of buying power from other states, he said.

Meanwhile, the Left parties today held statewide agitations to demand scrapping of the proposed Jaitapur nuclear power plant.

The agitation is against the “the repression unleashed by the government on the people of Jaitapur,” said Prakash Reddy, Mumbai city CPI secretary.  PTI
