Hyderabad, Dec 5: The CPI today said it is not in favour of setting up an external regulator for the media but regretted growing “influence” of corporate entities over the fourth estate.
“We don't want it (media) to be censored by any Government body or institution in the name of regulation,” CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan said here.
He was speaking after inaugurating the new head office of party-affiliated ‘Visalandhra' Telugu daily here.
Noting that several scams were unearthed by the media, he said the CPI favoured independence of journalists. Bardhan, however, regretted that “influence” of corporate entities was growing over the media.
The veteran Communist appreciated ‘Visalandhra' for its pro-people coverage of news reflecting the aspirations of Andhra Pradesh during the last over five decades.
CPI Deputy General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy, CPI State Secretary K Narayana and several other party leaders participated in the programme.
