Agartala: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has appointed MLA Birjit Sinha as president of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee to strengthen the party organisation in the Left-ruled state, a spokesman said Saturday.
"Sonia Gandhi Friday appointed Birjit Sinha, 63, as president of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee. He succeeded Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl," state Congress spokesman Tapas Dey told IANS.
Both Sinha and Hrangkhawl are Congress' sitting legislators.
He said: "Tripura's royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, 37 and Ashish Kumar Saha, 55, were appointed as working president. Saha was also the working president in the outgoing state committee."
Dey, a former legislator, said the leadership has changed to boost the party organisation and work against the misgovernance of the Left Front government, which according to him, grossly failed to check corruption in the state.
Debbarman said the party would work to induct more youths in politics.
